When to Come and What To Expect:
Fly Fishing: Yellowstone National Park - July - Firehole River
The Firehole River can fish well into the month of July. It all depends on the weather
and amount of water. Some years it is good, and some years it isn't. I think all of the
local people start saying it is finished far before it actually is.
I do think most years, it only last until around the middle of the month at best though. I
really haven't seen it still cool enough past the middle of July. On the average I would
say you shouldn't be fishing the Firehole River past the 15th of July.
The White Miller caddis egg laying event provides plenty of action in the late evening.
By late evening, I mean from 7-10 PM. PMDs, or Pale Morning Dun spinners, provide
good fishing during the early morning. The fishing is good from about 8-10AM during
the PMD spinner falls. This is a hook size #18 mayfly.
