August is a fair-weather month, with the most consistent hatches and good stream conditions. It is the best time for lake fishing, especially the backcountry lakes. Most all the rivers in the park should fish well in August. The Firehole and Madison can warm up too much and may not be a good choice. Hatches will slow down some. It will be even more important to match them correctly using Perfect Flies which look much like the real things. Many of our patterns were developed in the park. Grasshoppers, ants, and beetles can be important in the trout diet.
