Planning A Yellowstone Fly Fishing Trip - Firehole River - Part 2
This image may give you a good idea of just how clear the water in the Firehole
River can get. You can see the entire bottom very clearly and the image doesn't
begin to depict just how well you can see it. The big downfall to this is that every
trout in the stream can also see you better than you can see them.
Notice when there's a broken surface, it is an entirely different situation. It
provides cover for the trout. It's a tough situation. The thing that makes the trout
lose a little of their caution is a good hatch. This was taken in late June and
there was a good caddisfly hatch occurring after sunset near dark. The low light
also helps with the clear, smooth water situation.
