Destinations: Fryingpan River, Colorado
The Fryingpan River is one of Colorado's best trout streams. It can become
crowded at times, but it is for a very good reason. The little tailwater produces
some very nice trout and there are plenty of them. It flows from Ruedi Reservoir
into the Roaring Fork River. It is considered Gold Metal Waters, which in the
state of Colorado, means their very best trout water.

This river will drive you crazy if you let it. You can often see large 18 inch and
larger trout swimming along and even rising to the surface eating insects. They
are catchable, but you want do it unless you do everything right. They aren't
pushovers by any means. The river has a huge population of all sizes of trout of
all four species - brook, brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. A western grand
slam is highly possible in this stream.

One of the best things about the Fryingpan River is the large aquatic insect
population. It has a very diverse mayfly, caddisfly, and stonefly population. It
even has mysis shrimp that get through the dam from Ruedi Reservoir which
accounts for the large trout found below the dam.

The
Fryingpan River is one of the very best streams in Colorado and the West
for that matter. If you ever get the opportunity, you should give it a try. You want
be disappointed.
