Fly Fishing Report – 02/13/23
The National Park’s general fishing season starts in late May, though some streams and lakes don’t open until June 15 or July 15. Conditions change day to day but especially month to month. Water temperature is controlled by snow runoff and rain as well as air temperature. It is important to know what you should be facing when you arrive, depending on the time of the season you plan to fish. Here is a quick glimpse at what to expect at the beginning of the season from May to June.
The season starts in late May on the Saturday of Memorial Day. This is when the Firehole River has an advantage. It is the first one to clear from snowmelt. It may be your only choice. It normally provides anglers with some very good dry fly fishing thanks to it mayfly and caddisfly hatches. The good action usually continues through the end of June.
During the month of June, you will have more options but still including the Firehole River. In addition, the Gibbon and Madison Rivers offer more opportunity. IN addition there are several small streams that also offer additional opportunities. By the middle of June, most of the snow will have melted and more places will be clear. You will also find the lakes within the park becoming clear of ice.
